Description
Willard Brook State Forest is a super nice patch of forest seated on the border between Townsend and Ashby. Several boulders and rock faces lurk in the mountain laurel. While there’s plenty of choss, a fair amount of the rock is quality granite which is very much like the granite at Blair Woods. Perhaps some of Townsend’s more difficult routes live here.
Getting There
Parking can be had on Rte. 119 just before the Ashby border at the ranger station. There’s room for several cars just outside the gates which get shut every evening upon the station closing. Parking inside the gates past closing may get you locked in. Additional parking can be had by parking at Damon Pond and hiking in via Friends Loop Trail. MA state parks passes are often checked during the busy season. The park is fairly popular for camping, swimming, picnicking, and hiking, etc. It’s worth noting that Trap Falls is up the road just a short distance for those that like to go chasing waterfalls. A picturesque boulder problem lives next to the falls too.
Once parked at the ranger station, the trailhead is across the street. Be really careful crossing! Cars tend to drive super fast on this road, and there’s a blind corner.
