The two areas Jefferson County Open Space intends to close in Clear Creek Canyon, shown on the attached maps, encompass the active eagle nests. If the Clear Creek eagles continue to nest in the active nests, these areas will remain closed from February 1 through July 31. If the eagles choose different nesting sites, the closures will be adjusted accordingly to protect those eagles during their breeding season.
Currently, rock climbing areas that fall inside of the seasonal raptor closures include:
Blonde Formation
Bumbling Stock
Evil Area
Ghost Crag
Highlander
Skinny Legs
Stumbling Block
Tetanus Garden
Fault Caves
Description
The Sun Boulder is a quality, off the radar boulder perched high on the hillside above the Dike Boulders. The one problem here is a great winter testpiece, offering a sunny aspect and a flat landing.
Getting There
The Sun Boulder is one of the most upcanyon boulders in Clear Creek. Park at a large pullout on the river side of the road past the Waves Wall but before the final bend out of the canyon. It’s directly under a nice looking, moderate crag on the hill and a few hundred yards upstream from the old building. Cross the highway, and bust straight up the hill. The boulder itself sits right next to the slabby crag on its upstream (or left) side, hidden by a large tree.
