Description Suggest change

Wallum Lake Area is a very popular spot for beach-goers in the summertime and the most well travelled section of the Douglas State Forest. Little known is the many bouldering opportunities of the boulderfields to the west of the lake. From what I have discovered, cleaned, and worked on, there are upwards of seventy quality boulder problems here of varying difficulty. The rocks are fairly spread out, but all can be accessed within a ten or so minute approach. The rock quality is excellent for the most part.

Among the features of this area are some definite Central MA highlights, most notably the Titanic (V7), The Perfect Storm (V6), Chutes and Ladders (V1), Hang Ten! (V1+), Double Edged Sword (V4), and the ?Impossible Boulder project? (V10+).

Getting There Suggest change

Parking for Wallum Lake can be found via Wallum Lake Road in Douglas. Follow this road for about a mile before an obvious right hand turn onto Wallum Lake Park Road (across from maintenance building and Smokey Bear sign). Follow this about a half mile and past a toll booth. Parking fees are required from Memorial Day through Labor Day and costs $9 for MA residents, $30 for out of staters (A MA state parks annual pass is $60). Continue to the right, past a dirt parking area, stay right, and enter a paved lot. All boulders are accessed via a major trail at the back right (northwest) corner of the lot.

This is the only parking area of the state forest that requires a parking fee (in the summer). These boulders can still be accessed via other trailheads albeit with a much longer approach. You can also avoid the fee by parking after 5:30 in the summer.
