Description
On the East side of the park ( a few miles north of East Glacier) this relatively lightly-used section of the park APPEARED to have some very climbable rock in Upper Two Medicine Lake, No Name Lake and on the trail to Dawson Pass.
I know of no routes in these areas, but will post some photographs of the surrounding rock in the two sub-areas: Upper 2-Med. Lake and No Name Lake.
Access is via the trail systems and/or boat access of Two Medicine Lake. There is Parking and camping at 2-Medicine Lake, and a sort of "general store". When we were there (Aug 2021) you could get some camping supplies like butane canisters, but if you are overnight camping, come with your own food as there wasn't much of a selection beyond canned goods.
Getting There
A few miles north of the ( very small ) town of East Glacier* is Two Medicine Lake. Entrance to the Park here does not require an advance reservation ( as of 2021)
From the sprawling megalopolis of East Glacier* drive north on Rt 49 about 2 1/2 miles, turn left onto Two Medicine Rd. You''l pass Lower 2-Medicine Lake and soon (about 1 1/2 miles) the Park Entrance. Soon thereafter pass Running Eagle Falls (well worth the 5-10 min walk) and then arrive at the end of the road where you'll find camping, the boat dock, beach, a "general store" and parking. I suspect if you're planning overnight parking you should ask around for the best place to park. The boat ticket booth is probably as good as any place to ask.
From the parking at Two Medicine Lake you can hike either the Dawson Pass Trail or South Shore Trail, or take a boat ($16 -$20 round trip) to the end of the lake. From the upper boat dock ( end of the lake) Upper Two Medicine Lake is about an hour hike (1.8 mi) , No Name Lake a bit further (2.3 mi)
The map shows camping at Upper Two Medicine Lake, probably about a half-dozen sites.
There are about a half-dozen campsites at No Name Lake.
I don’t know the situation with with Bivi’s.
About *East Glacier - If you come from the west (from Missoula, or Kalispell/Whitefish ) you will pass by West Glacier. West Glacier has a grocery store, general store and, by-and-large, is substantially larger with more amenities than East Glacier. East Glacier, while there are signs of growth, is very small and in 2021 we saw a number of establishments closed, probably due to Covid, but they didn't look like they were about to re-open. There was a coffee shop for breakfast and lunch, and a clean laundry-mat.
The immense Glacier Park Lodge has dinning, but even here we found the menu limited. (All told, the Bison burger was the best.)
The town of St Mary's, about 30-45 min (Rt 49 and part of Rt89 are very curvy) north and at the East entrance to the Going-to-the-Sun-Road, has a good grocery store and is substantially larger than East Glacier. We did not go to Browning, about 12-15 mines east of East Glacier on fast Rt 2, but it looks bigger on the map.
Finally, we flew from the east coast into Missoula, and I ignored the possibility of flying into Kalispell as I just thought it "too small". MISTAKE ! Wealth is flowing into the Whitefish area as Californians and others leave the high-tax states. Accordingly, there are far more flights into Kalispell than you might think.
