Description
Petrified Hill consists of the large majority of the conglomerate sandstone boulders. The boulders range from small to very large. Many of them have soft landings, good topouts, and downclimbs! The rock here is stellar and doesn't break very easily (just watch out when pulling on some flakes, because, yes, it is still sandstone). I prefer this sandstone here over the sandstone at Rigg's Hill. It still may be sharp compared to the softer Dakota sandstone but not razor blade-y.
Getting There
From the first parking lot for Opal Hill, go straight out on the trail towards some large boulders on the hillside of Opal Hill. These boulders are darker in color. You will reach a sign to either go left or right for the Opal Loop. Go left to reach the first boulder (Opal Hill First). There is a footpath to the other boulders in a drainage area, and the trail becomes more apparent the farther up the hill you hike.
