Description Suggest change

Designated by the main attraction in this area of Snake Hill Wildlife Management Area for most folks. There are 3 overlooks, with the right-most (skiers' right) being the most popular. In this area there are multiple routes and boulder along the base of the overlook cliff band and in the nearby area. Each overlook provides a great view of the northern side of the Cheat Canyon.

Please make sure to follow local ordinances and follow LNT to help maintain this area as a cherished local WMA.

Climbing in this area is still under development. For questions please reach out to local groups such as the Cheat Canyon Climbers Coalition and the local gym Gritstone Climbing and Fitness. Both have friendly groups of people who are more than willing to answer questions about the area.

Getting There Suggest change

From the southern most Parking Lot (39.610044, -79.829452), hike out the obvious gravel trail past the gate, along a oil/gas tank for about 1.1 miles to the main overlook (39.620242, -79.816243) mentioned above. Just before the final fork for the main overlook take the trail on skier's right of the overlook which gradually descends around through the right gully of the overlook. You'll find a couple knotted fixed lines for steeper bits which will aid if anything is slippery.

Once under the overlook take care to not stand under the overlook. For better or worse, there is no discernible route (or even aid line) directly up overlook face. Probably a blessing in disguise as this would likely prove dangerous if hikers were to drop/throw anything (hopefully they know not to throw or litter anything, LNT!!)
