Description Suggest change

This small town is located about a four hour drive from Leh on the way to Pangong Lake. There is a large Indian military presence in and around Tangste and also lots of tourists on their way to and from the lake.

There are two granite areas around Tangste that have likely seen some climbing activity. One area is right near town, just above the military base (the base's motto: "Train hard, fight easy"). The other is few miles outside of town toward Pangong Lake.

There is huge potential for new routes here. If we were to go rock climbing in Ladakh again, Tangste is a place we would revisit. The cliffs on the way to the lake are generally on the left side of the road and at least three pitches high. They are easily seen from the road and some are within 100 yards of the road. Lodging is available in Tangste or you could likely camp near the roadside cliffs.

Getting There Suggest change

This small town is located about a four hour drive from Leh on the way to Pangong Lake.

Through Jamy at the Gravi T climbing gym in Leh, we hired an excellent taxi driver named Tashi, who had a new SUV. With Tashi, we did a week long road trip in August 2019, checking out cliffs near Dad, Pang, Upshi and Tangste.
