Description

James Pass is an easily accessible valley containing Eagle Lake and James Lake, hemmed in by Maze Peak and Eagle Mountain to the south and north, and lots of ice on either side. The most popular route in the area is Dream On, although there are other worthwhile obscurities and adventures to be had as well. You will likely have the valley to yourself so this area is a great option to get away from the crowds.

Getting There

Drive as for Yaha Tinda Ranch and upon crossing the Eagle Creek bridge (signed) there is a parking area less than a couple hundred meters past the bridge. Park here. From the trail head follow the obvious road up over a hill and then down into the valley and to Eagle Lake. From the shores of Eagle Lake walk directly across the frozen lake and head to your desired climb.

Alternatively for any of the Maze Peak routes the shortest approach is to drive up Hwy 40 N and park as for the James Lake trailhead at 51.745369, -115.362015. From the trailhead follow the old quad trail along the creek bed all the way to James Lake. Once at the southwest end of James Lake cut off the quad trail and head through the trees trending right until you hit the obvious gully. Follow the gully the whole way up to the base of your chosen climb.
