Description
The Dry Ranges are host to a number of generally obscure ice routes. Encompassing the eastern fringes of Banff National Park along the Red Deer River these mountains do not see much traffic at all. If you want to climb ice in an amazing setting with not a soul around and not much snow, this area is for you. Most of the climbs are located along the Yaha Tinda Valley road, a gravel road that is regularly plowed and accessibly by pretty much any vehicle with the proper tires and careful driving.
Getting There
Only approachable from the East (the road terminates within Banff in the West), either take Hwy 40 North from Cochrane past the Ghost, Waiporous and eventually crossing a bridge over the Red Deer River and turning left onto Yaha Tinda Valley Rd, or approach from Cremona via Hwy 22, turning left onto Township Rd 304 and following it West until the Red Deer River bridge. The former option is more straight foward as there are a number of intersections on Township Rd 304 that split off for industrial purposes that can be confusing.
