Description
Further up the road from the Cow Skull Boulders, you run into the Pinkland Boulders, which lie across the canyon on the Left side of the road. Here, you'll see hundreds of boulders scouring the landscape, covering an area of about 1000 acres on the hillside. Everything from your one move wonder sit starts, to massive pillars jetting out of the landscape like the ruins of Stonehenge. There are even a few sport routes and top ropes on some of the taller boulders, so bring a rope and lite wrack if you feel so inclined. Just finding your bearings in this jumbled conglomerate of boulders can take the better part of a day, but you're guaranteed to run into something worthy of your time, and its not unlikely that you'll end up jumping from boulder to boulder, spending your entire day climbing the unexplored without ever finding the boulder you were actually looking for.
It’s worth noting that the Pinklands in its entirety is comprised of two conjoined areas separated by a small ravine running North/South through its center, acting as a natural landmark separating the two areas. On the Eastern side of the ravine is the Pinklands proper. On the West side is the Highlands. This separation is made due to the vast size of the area and number of boulders found within it. Serving as a way to help further define and figure out just where the hell you are.
Getting There
From the road leading to the West Face Area. continue along the road which dips down steeply after the parking area for the Cow Skull Boulders. You'll follow the road which turns to the East heading uphill. You'll see the Pinkland Boulders across the canyon on your left and The Front Boulders off to your right. There is very little parking along the road except for a few spots which will barely accommodate a car.
Continue along the road past the “Roadside Attraction Boulder” for another 1/4 mile and look for a steep hill on the right just past a pile of boulders with a small dead tree trunk sticking out. With 4WD you can drive up the steep hill to the crest which has the best maintained trail just on the other side. Park on the crest of the looking over the canyon below. The main trail for the Front is just across the road.
For additional parking or vehicles with less off-road ability, continue up the road another 1/4 mile until you reach a small grassy undeveloped parking area on the Left side of the road which is big enough for several cars. Park here and you should see the Slashface and Cracked Egg Boulder on top of the hill to the Northwest, about 30 yards away.
