Description
This small crag is located near the Boxcar swimming hole on the North Fork of the Boquet River. The crag has two routes, one older route that is now pretty dirty (Heat Wave, 5.10) on the right side, and the other a high-quality, steep face climb (Hot Flash, 5.12a) centered in the face.
You can set an anchor for toproping via a short, easy rappel. This anchor serves the two known routes, although to toprope Heat Wave you will need some directional gear (the route leans left for its entire length). To access the top, walk right and scramble up a depression in the face.
The Boxcar swimming hole is also known as Shoebox Falls, and is labeled as such on some maps.
Getting There
Park at or near the stone bridge where NY 73 crosses over the Boquet River. There are some camp sites on the south side of the river at the end of a short 4WD road. Walk up this 4WD road to its end, then pick up a good hiking trail that stays on the left side of the river ("left" when facing upstream). Follow this to where it crosses the river, then continue on the right side. Cross a tributary and continue past the Boxcar swimming hole. Look for an outcropping of rock (with a small cairn on top) on the right side of the trail. Leave the trail just past this outcropping and hike uphill 5 minutes, away from the river, to the cliff.
