Description Suggest change

The Red Wall is a single pitch formation located east of Staunton Rocks and overlooks both the Black Mountain Creek and the Pooka. The currently developed climbing faces northwest and stays in the shade until about 2 or 3pm, which makes for another option to escape the summer sun. The climbing is generally steep, on large featured holds, and consists of mostly sport routes. The top of the Red Wall, which provides a great overlook and fun exploring, is easily accessed on the north end.

Caution: climbers should be aware that the Red Wall is relatively new and has areas of fractured rock. Climbing parties should take all reasonable precautions including helmets, protected belay stances, not hanging out under climbers on route, and keeping kids on a leash, etc.

Getting There Suggest change

From the entrance/visitor center, continue driving up paved road for a couple miles, following the signs to the Lazy V Parking Lot (2022 upper parking lot). The top of the Red Wall is visible from the Lazy V lot and is about a 0.5 mile hike to the climbs. From the Lazy V lot, exit the lot at northwest, take Lazy V trail for about 200 yards, right (east) on dirt access road, then immediate left on Lazy V trail, follow Lazy V trail uphill to Staunton Ranch trail,  and then right (east)  on Staunton Ranch trail for a couple hundred feet to the signed Red Wall trail junction.

Follow the Red Wall trail uphill as it curves to the east and north of the formation. From the saddle junction at the north end of the formation, take a right to access base or a left to hike to top.

If the Lazy V Parking Lot is closed or full, it is about a 2.5 mile hike from the Meadow Parking Lot (lower parking lot with track chair building) to the climbs. Hike the Staunton Ranch trail for about 2 miles to the signed Red Wall trail on the right. If you cross Black Mountain Creek or get to the Old Mill trail, you’ve gone about 1/10 mile too far.
