The Headwall on the Sainte Margerite River offers some of the finest and hardest multi-pitch ice and mixed climbing in Quebec surrounded by scenic backcountry terrain.
Park on the northeast side of a pulloff at the dam site, Barrage Sainte Margerite along QC 138 west of Sept-Îles, Quebec. From there, if conditions are safe, you can ski out across the river. Another option is to take the snowmobile trail east until it branches left. Take this until it heads out onto the river. The safest path is often marked by stakes in the snow. The best mixed and ice climbing is at or near the headwall, located 5 miles upstream from the dam. Be aware that water levels can change and water can flow on top of the ice, making it slushy underneath the snow cover in spots.
