Description

Khon Kaen is a fast developing area with a lot of potential. There are 2 large bouldering area: Hin Chang Si in Nam Pong National Park and Zoolander in Khao Suan Kwang Zoo. Development of Hin Chang Si for bouldering started in 2010 by Gavriel Jecan. Zoolander is a new area that is just recently developed in 2017. Two area combined makes Khon Kaen the largest boulder field in Thailand, and probably in South East Asia. There are at least 300 boulders and more than 1000 problems ranging from V0-V12 and also a lot of harder lines for projects. The place saw the visit of 3 pro women climbers from the US (Alex Johnson, Sascha DiGulian, and Kati Hetrick) who opened a bunch of new problems.

We have established a small but strong climber community, Khon Kaen Climbing Club (KKCC), which has both American and Thai climbers who live in Khon Kaen. Recently, we have an access issue at Hin Chang Si as climbing activities are not approved by National Park authorities. We are working our best to secure recognition from the National Park Service. Climbers are welcome at Zoolander area and we do not have any access issue.

Beside bouldering, we are also developing and bolting a sport route on a great tall lime stone wall in Ampher Si Chompu, north west side of Khon Kaen city. We started bolting in late 2016 and currently (Mar 2021) there are more than 30 established lines and more to come.

The best time to climb here is Dec-Feb. It's OK for other season if you can take the heat.

Getting There

Depend on the area.

1. Hin Chang Si boulders

The main boulder field (lower meadow) is locates approximately at 116°38'42.0"N 102°36'09.7"E. Looking for Hin Chang Si view point on google maps. The boulder field is along the main road to the view point.

*Now we have access issue with Nam Phong National Park and you can no longer climb at Hin Chang Si.

2. Si Chompu sport climbing area

It is in Amper Si Chompu. About 2 hour drive from down town Khon Kaen. Try google 'Ban Sam Champa School' and 'Wat Tham Pha Nam Thiang.'

3. Zoolander

Khao Sun Kwang Khon Kaen Zoo. 50 min drive north from Khon Kaen city.

Where to stay?

You can stay in the cityand make a day trip to any climb in Khon Kaen.
If you prefer bouldering, Zoolander is located in Khon Kaen zoo and they have nice bungalows within a walking distance to boulders.

Sadly, there is no public transportation to any climbing area. You can stay anywhere in Khon Kaen city and drive/taxi/van to climb.
