Khon Kaen is a fast developing area with a lot of potential. There are 2 large bouldering area: Hin Chang Si in Nam Pong National Park and Zoolander in Khao Suan Kwang Zoo. Development of Hin Chang Si for bouldering started in 2010 by Gavriel Jecan. Zoolander is a new area that is just recently developed in 2017. Two area combined makes Khon Kaen the largest boulder field in Thailand, and probably in South East Asia. There are at least 300 boulders and more than 1000 problems ranging from V0-V12 and also a lot of harder lines for projects. The place saw the visit of 3 pro women climbers from the US (Alex Johnson, Sascha DiGulian, and Kati Hetrick) who opened a bunch of new problems.

We have established a small but strong climber community, Khon Kaen Climbing Club (KKCC), which has both American and Thai climbers who live in Khon Kaen. Recently, we have an access issue at Hin Chang Si as climbing activities are not approved by National Park authorities. We are working our best to secure recognition from the National Park Service. Climbers are welcome at Zoolander area and we do not have any access issue.

Beside bouldering, we are also developing and bolting a sport route on a great tall lime stone wall at Dong Lan Forest, Amphur Si Chompu, Khon Kaen. We started bolting in late 2016 and currently there are 6 established lines and more to come.

Where to stay?

There is no public transportation to climbing area. You can stay anywhere in Khon Kaen city and drive/taxi/van to climb. We highly recommend Khon Kaen Centrum Hotel, where we hosted the festival in 2017. Veena, the owner, is climber friendly. She can arrange a van for big group of climbers as well.
If you don't have your own vehicle and want to carpool with us, please contact Facebook page @khonkaenclimbingclub in advance.

I visited Hin Chang Si briefly during prime season and it was incredible. There seems to be ton of unticked lines awaiting hard (wo)men to open (so long as you don't mind doing some cleaning) and whether you are looking to discover new lines or having a relaxed day of cragging, this place definitely worth your visit.

In comparison to climbing area in the states, I would say this place is similar to HP40 in Alabama with additional heat/humidity (which makes the climbing a bit harder w/o friction). The temps in the morning was much more tolerable.

I do believe this place has the potential to become the mecca of Thailand/Southeast Asia for bouldering and it won't be long until it should appears on the radar for any visiting climbers.

The community seems solid and are very conscious to sustainable development.

Big thanks to the locals who've been putting in countless hours of hard work here. May 5, 2017
