Description

Bays Mountain is a small crag located within Bays Mountain Park, a city park in Kingsport. It was developed around 2012 by local climber Stuart Everett and contains about a dozen climbs, mostly top-rope with a few sport and trad climbs thrown in. The cliff is sandstone and ranges in height from 25 to 40 feet. Rock quality is generally good, although there are some dirty spots and the occasional loose rock. Helmets are recommended. Grades range from 5.4 to 5.10. It is never crowded with climbers, although you will occasionally see some rescue personnel practicing rappelling. While not a destination climbing spot, it is a nice, fun crag to spend a few hours if you are in the area.
Other activities in the park include boating, hiking, mountain biking, a wildlife area, and a planetarium.

Getting There

From I-26 near Kingsport, take Exit 3 at the Meadowview Convention Center. Head west on Reservoir Road, following signs to Bays Mountain Park (~3 miles). There is a $5 fee to enter the park. Once inside the park, travel up the mountain and when you get to the dam, veer right into the overflow parking lot. Park across from a small stone building just past the observatory. Walk past the small ampitheater to an overlook. The Cliffside trail goes along the top of the cliff to the southeast, and a climber's trail goes down to the base of the cliff through a gap in the edge of the fence. Approach time is 2 minutes.
