Description
Costa Ricas most scenic sport climbing located in the protected wilderness area of the Cerros de Escazú is only skip away from the capital.
This section includes all routes bolted, mostly single pitch, Although there are a few two pitch lines to be enjoyed there as well.
For the latest information for bouldering check out Pico Blanco Boulders. As well as Guía Boulder Pico Blanco.
The rock is of volcanic origin, with different textures and densities of gneiss. The most abundant of which presents a stripped structure that tends to form into pockets, crimps and plenty of edges.
Getting There
Look for "Pico Blanco - Entrada a sendero" in the driving app Waze (works best in Costa Rica).
Once the dirt road widens you will see a sign that reads "Zona Protectora cerros de Escazú". Park here if your car is not a 4x4.
In a 4x4 one can drive another 300 meters to a second widening of the dirt road where you can park.
From either parking, start hiking down the same dirt road about 15 min until you reach a creek.
Here is where you will find most of the boulder concentration entering the wire gate on your right.
For the sport climbing keep stay on the road, which gradually gets steeper for a good 5 minutes until you reach two signs: "no littering" & "enjoy the view". That's were you veer off the road to the right through the small fence in between of two trees. From here its a straight up the steep hill / pasture for 20 min. When the pasture gives way to a mystical pine/cypress forest, you're almost there! Five more minutes straight up gets you to the first climbing routes in Pico Blanco. While climbing take a minute now and then to take in the incredible panoramas of the central valley from one of the best crags in Costa Rica.
Best is contacting some of our friendly local climbers to take you up there.
