Description
Welcome to climbing in Costa Rica!
Mostly known for its wildlife, surfing, hiking, and volcanoes, Costa Rica also offers great climbing for the adventurous spirit.
Prime climbing season is late November through April as its dry throughout the country.
However, year around climbing is possible on crags with enough overhang like Cachi and a few boulders in Pico Blanco.
In the dry season it is best to search out climbing that is shaded at the hottest hours of the day, as the tropical sun can make the rock too hot to touch and midday humidity can create a sauna like atmosphere. Don't forget to pack brushes as you may find some less-trafficked routes or boulders in need of some cleaning.
Costa Rica main sport climbing areas are: Cachí, Forum, Pico Blanco, Providencia, Malpaís, Aserrí and Cerro Blanco.
Most routes are well protected with bolts and anchors good condition. Helmets and awareness for potential rockfall is always encouraged.
For climbers traveling here with no gear, the only crag offering rentals is Cachí. There are routes for most all levels of climbing difficulty, from easier 5.6 all the way up to 5.13c/d, and even a few projects that might be harder for the training focused ambitious climber.
The best bouldering can be found in Providencia, Líbano, Cerro de la Muerte, and Pico blanco.
There is very few multipitch climbing, though Providencia de Dota offers two bolted lines that top out a massive, 120m (aprox.) slab.
One route goes at 5.11 while the other one is a fun 5.9. More information on their location and approach is needed.
Pico Blanco has a few two pitch routes on the Tower area.
Overall, climbing in Costa Rica is an amazing experience with good quality volcanic or sedimentary rock.
Most crags and areas are either next to or very close to National Parks so its a good way to get to know the country or combine into different kinds of trips. Most crags have that feeling of immersive jungle climbing.
