Administratively, the Municipality of Kunming includes the urban center of Kunming City, plus a large area of surrounding counties. The area lies at the heart of the Yunnan Plateau, where adventurous locals began exploring the surrounding hills in 1999. As of 2016, numerous caves and faces have been developed in a 30-km long belt extending from the Western Hills (Xi Shan) escarpment, across Dian Chi from Kunming City, northwest to Fumin Canyon in Fumin County. In between lies Swallow Cave, The Gash, and six crags near the village of Xiaomoyu. This is just the beginning. There are plenty more hidden gems waiting to be found.
