Description Suggest change

Mt. Stephen is home to a number of classic ice and mixed lines, and lies just east of the community of Field. It is first on the left as one enters the broad valley from the east, where the community of Field is located. A couple of rail tunnels on the east end of the mountain help identify it. Routes are highly exposed to avalanche hazard both from above and below, they face a bit north of west, and are easily visible from the highway.

Getting There Suggest change

The best way to access Mt. Stephen routes is to park in the lot next to the bridge where Hwy 1 crosses the Yoho River. Use the bridge to cross the river, then hike up to the railroad tracks. Walk west next to the tracks until you are below the route you wish to climb. A longer approach option is to park on the east side of Field, and walk east along the tracks. Either way, it is important to keep in mind that the tracks are private property, DO NOT walk on the tracks or go through tunnels, and stay away from avalanche fencing. In order to preserve access, It is important to keep a low profile when climbing Mt. Stephen routes.
