Description Suggest change

Varlakonda is a fantastic, predominantly sport crag north of Bangalore, that was established in 2014. An east-west running granite ridge, the north (and more shaded) side currently has about 20 established climbs on it, offering a surprising variety of character: the climbing mixes mantles, slopers, the odd crack or roof, and plenty of tiny crimps. Most of the routes are 5.10 or harder and about half of them are bolted for lead, while the rest can be top roped by traversing from neighboring anchors.

All bolts are 3/8" and a 60 m rope should get you up and down nearly all of the routes.

Getting There Suggest change

Varlakonda is just off the Bangalore-Hyderabad highway, about 70 km north of the city. See map for location. From the highway, exit onto the road shown in the map and park on the side of the road by the fields, with the wall directly in front of you. Walk along a path through the fields and and scrub beyond, aiming generally towards the left edge of the giant roof (with a striking dihedral above) high up on the rock. Once in the scrub, the path angles left towards a giant boulder, and then a branch heads up and to the right after about 5 minutes. Total time for the approach is about 15-20 minutes.
