Getting There

On the far side. 20+min. approach. Before reaching the Benches trail, from the main dirt road, look for a faint trail on right. Turns into a cobble stone trail that leads to a clearing. to the right is a good swim area, but the approach continues to the left. Ascend a man made rock wall and follow cairns up and around the large boulders to the top of the Benches. Continue following cairns up the slabs, then trend right on a trail through some manzanita and trees, then down the slabs below, marked with cairns. Continue left up stream and you will come to the Sliding Tower. Under Armour Arete can be seen past that and around the corner is the right side of the cliff.

Bill: I have no idea what you mean by "On the far side". You need a better description for how to get there. If you send me a topo of the area, I will add it to the guide sheets. Oct 1, 2015

John, Bill can correct me if I'm wrong but I think this is sort of over the other side of the hill from the main emeralds ridge line, but closer to the parking area relative to say - bear's lair. It's easiest (I believe - but Bill may have made a better trail from the benches trail or something) to approach by heading ESE from the road after you past the the culvert and follow the South Yuba river towards the big dam on lake Spaulding. From the photos it looks like its under the flume on the other side of the Yuba but I'm not sure which side of the river the routes are on. I think you can cross the river around the swimmin hole if its on the other side. I've hiked the ridge up over the main emeralds area and I believe I've seen this area and the swimming hole that's near it. If its the spot I'm thinking of its kind of a cool place. Oct 5, 2015

Sorry about the previous information posted. The sliding tower now has a new sport route on the west face called Widows Watch Tower. Thanks and hopefully I will get better at posting soon. Oct 30, 2015

Approach beta: take a right at the steel bench and walk maybe 100yds on a faint trail. This should put you at about the manmade wall. Turn left up and over the wall, then follow kairns up the ridge and down the back side.

This in no way involves climbing up onto the flume, traversing it, doing a sketchy downclimb, fording a river, and then bushwacking. So if you find yourself doing any of these things, you're doing it wrong. Jul 19, 2016
