Description Suggest change

This is probably the best place to sample rock climbing in Belize. There are two cliff bands with about 20 routes total. All of the climbs but one were established between 2010 and 2014 by Todd & Donette Swain and Belizean adventure guides.

The cliffs are on private property and Mike Bogaert, the now-deceased owner (and total character), was extremely supportive of climbing. Mike's heirs charge a modest day fee to climb. While you are there, it's also worth taking the canoe tour into the cave.

The lower tier, just above the tourist facilities for Barton Creek Cave, has about ten routes from 5.2 to 5.11. The upper tier (follow the steps up toward the top of the zipline) has another ten routes from about 5.7 to 5.10+. The routes are bolted and have anchors. Near the cave entrance is some DWS.

An Africanized bees nest appeared in a hole the center of the lower tier circa 2014 and then disappeared. The nest was up and right of the "Alien Head." There's a bolt with a carabiner near the hole where the bees were. It's likely they will return at some point...

The smaller, conical shaped bee nests that you see all over Central America are "virgin bees." These bees don't sting.

Getting There Suggest change

Go to Mike's Place at Barton Creek. You'll see signs on the Western Highway for Barton Creek Cave.
