Hokkaido is known for skiing and wintersports, but plenty of climbing and hiking opportunities exist, and crags are never crowded. Sport, trad, and bouldering can all be found here. The season is generally from May to October, depending on the area. For beta, check out Volume 1 of 日本１００岩場, 100 Crags of Japan. Available at Shuugakuso in Sapporo and Asahikawa, which stores should be your first stop on any outdoor adventure.

Fly into Shin-Chitose airport or take a train. Base yourself out of Sapporo or Asahikawa.
