Access Issue: IMPORTANT notes on Wet Rock and Human Waste Details

WET ROCK: The sandstone in Red Rocks is fragile and is very easily damaged when it is wet. Holds rip off and climbs have been and will continue to be permanently damaged due to climbers not respecting this phenomenon. After a heavy storm the rock will remain wet, sometimes for several days. PLEASE DO NOT CLIMB IN RED ROCKS DURING OR AFTER RAIN. A good rule of thumb is that if the ground near your climb is at all damp (and not powdery bone-dry sand), then do not climb. There are many alternatives (limestone, granite, basalt, and plastic) nearby.

HUMAN WASTE: Human waste is a major issue plaguing the area. The Southern Nevada Climbers Coalition (SNCC) works to provide "wag bags" free of charge in several locations: Black Velvet Canyon, The Hamlet, Kraft Mountain Area, The Gallery, and The Black Corridor. These bags are designed so that you can pack your waste out. Consider bringing one to be part of your daily kit no matter where you go. Once used, please dispose of them properly. Do not throw them in the toilets at the parking areas.

Description

The wall of soft red rock which looms above a portion of the Calico Tanks Trail. The wall faces southwest and gets sun from mid-morning until late afternoon when the sun dips behind the mountains. This is very close to a popular trail and you will likely be a bit of a spectacle for the many hikers.

Most of the routes were minimally cleaned and have had little traffic, so they are still cleaning up. The exception is Southern Comfort which is in good shape. There are a couple of abandoned anchors and there could be a few more lines with proper cleaning.

In addition to the obvious sport lines on the main red face, there are a couple of mixed/trad climbs on the left side of the red rock, and then a few more bolted lines way left on the wall of white rock to the left. All of these are very seldom climbed.

Getting There

Follow the main Calico Tanks trail heading north out of the parking lot. Continue on the trail, keeping right at the fork with the Turtlehead Peak trail. The beach is the first red wall immediately adjacent to the left side of the trail after a particularly soft, sandy section of the trail.
