Beginning as early as APRIL 1, 2026, 140 acres at the top of the Sandia Mountains will be under a closure order so the Forest Service can complete two different projects. The first project is an extensive "fuel reduction project" and the second is the demolition/remodeling of the whole upper parking lot and crest house. The Crest Road and all parking areas above the 10k parking lot will be closed in addition to the 140 acres of forest that will be under going the fuel reduction work. The Forest Service will be actively maintaining a project page on their website to communicate with the public: fs.usda.gov/r03/cibola/news…

Getting There

Find the La Luz trailhead at the South end of the Sandia Crest Parking area. Hike down the Crest Spur Trail to the junction with the La Luz and head on the La Luz. Several switchbacks down the trail you will come upon the first talus slope. Continue down two switchbacks from this point and you will come upon a faintish climbers trail that will head North, around 100 feet, to the base of the crag.
