Description

About 800 feet above the Utah Valley, and just north of Rock Canyon, the Hinterlands is great late fall, winter, or early spring area for sport climbers. The hike is pretty intense, going almost straight up the whole time with lots of switchbacks, but is very rewarding. With over 50 routes, these limestone walls face due south and west. Even during times of inversion, this area sits just above the smog line, making it a nice getaway. The routes range from 5.4 to 5.13+. With a 30 minute hike, it is an nice, quiet place to get away and still be close to the city.

Getting There

Drive toward Rock Canyon. At the four way stop above the Provo Temple, go north onto 1200 East. Continue on 1200 East for 0.8 miles. At the t-intersection, turn right into a cul-de-sac (Piute Drive). There will be a dirt road on the left going up to the shoreline trail. Either drive up the road or park here. Currently there are 'no trespassing' signs on either side of the trail. Walk or drive up the road for about 150 yards then head back south (taking the small trail to the right). Follow the road to the top of the hill and look for the trail heading up the mountain. It starts out as an old deer trail and then gets better. 20 – 30 minutes of a pretty intense hike. If you'd rather not hike through the 'no trespassing' signs for the first 100ft or so, you can drive around to 2740 to the south through the neighborhood and hit a 4x4 road from there. Go through the gate and follow up to the top of the hill and the trail starts there on the left.
