Description Suggestion

Mount Garfield is a huge rock massif that dominates the Middle Fork Snoqualmie River valley. Ascents are all long undertakings and generally require bivouacs or the longest days of summer to have enough daylight to finish. It has several peaks that are ascended, including the Main Peak and the Leaning Tower of Garfield; others include the West Peaks, Courte Echelle, East Peak, Outrigger Spire, Little Flat-Top and the North Peaks.

The mountain is mostly granodiorite and volcanic rocks; it is only 5519 feet tall, but has huge relief from the river valley. Due to the low elevation but high relief, all ascents involve brushy bushwhacking and long rock gullies before any climbing begins. Rockfall is also a hazard on Garfield.

Popular routes include the South Route on the Main Peak and the West Route on the Leaning Spire, the latter ascended first by Fred Beckey.

Getting There Suggestion

There aren't many official trails around the popular routes on Garfield; most ascents begin from the Middle Fork road after the Taylor River crossing.
