Description
The Bastille was constructed in the 1370’s as a fortified gate to protect Paris from invading English forces in the Hundred Years War.
Over the next 400 years it served as a royal treasury, a VIP guest house, and lastly as a prison. The writers Voltaire and Marquis de Sade spent some time there as prisoners. During the French Revolution it was stormed by a mob on 14 July 1789, in search of arms and ammunition. It was torn down shortly thereafter.
