Description

This climbs the right side of the East Face past 7 bolts. A bit chossy at the start.

Really enjoyed this climb with my 12-year old daughter. Anchored her down firmly to the big boulder at the base to belay me because I outweigh her by quite a bit but she's a terrific and reliable belayer. There seem to be two possible start moves. I used the one to the right with the big hollow flake. You can clip the first bolt from the boulder before starting. Apr 3, 2017

Hard start and poor rock quality down low, can't imagine some of those flakes are still attached! Pretty fun and interesting arete moves though and fun toward the top. Sep 7, 2016

Start move is 5.10, once you get your feet up its all 5.7 to the top, excellent! Jun 8, 2016

Gotta tick it if you're there - it's a five minute walk from the car and the exposure + epic view of Whitney are worth it. Mar 24, 2016

The BLM and the Alabama Hills Stewardship Group have been working on restoration projects in the Hills. Currently, the short stretch of road (200 meters) out to the Fin is closed to cars and is now a trail from a dedicated parking area. Other than the obvious conservation aspect, one added benefit is that you won't have to crop out the cars from your hero shots, making them all that more impressive to grandma...

I agree- hardest part is the start. Started off the boulder but still no feet and it's just kind of a leap to get your hands on and find your feet later. Super fun climb up the arete with beautiful view of the Whitney portal. Awesome climb! Thought the rock quality was fine. Good friction. Sep 25, 2015
One of the best photo ops available w/ the view of Whitney in the background. The crux is all in the start as there are no feet down low, after that features and the arete make it relatively comfortable. Oct 20, 2014
The low quality of rock makes it a bit stiffer. Fun nonetheless. Aug 2, 2014

Opening moves are the crux, but well protected by the first bolt being clipped from the ground. Fun route but the rock is a bit scrappy. Mar 17, 2013

First bolt is not too far a reach from the boulder. We clipped it and then did a direct start from the ground. Feb 20, 2012

I didn't think I was such a girl, but we used a stick clip on the first bolt.

After that it was all good. May 15, 2010

A must do if you are trying to "tick" the fin. If not, the routes to the left are actually better climbing for the grade. May 4, 2009
Replaced the shuts at the top of this route (which were loose) with bolt hangers December 2008. Re-installed the existing Mussy Hooks. Bolts in good condition. A good route!

The only thing this route has going for it is the photo op. Otherwise, steer clear! :P May 13, 2008

Great views from the climb, but the climbing is only so-so and the rock quality is somewhat lacking. Jul 3, 2007

We thought this was a pretty fun route and a good introduction to Alabama Hills; climb it if for the views of Whitney alone!! Jun 26, 2007

A star or two if only for the view of Whitney! Mar 26, 2007
