Description

This route is a small flow located about 100 meters up a small gully on U.S. 40 1/2 mile up from the first switchback turn (Big Bend Picnic area) going towards Berthoud Pass. I don't know if anyone has ever climbed it before (probably), but it is great for a quick fix for anyone living in Grand Co. and can't get down to Silverplume. The route is only about 15-20' high, but it is ice. Park in the small pull off area, watch out for traffic and snow plows. This is before the Stanley avalanche area, and if you pass the sign that says no parking next 3 miles, you've gone too far. There may be more vertical ice higher up the gully, I just haven't found it 'cause I didn't go more then 3/4 of a mile up.

Protection

Maybe 1-2 scewrs - the route is onle 15-20 feet.

Toprope Protection

On the trees or place a few screws.

Due to construction on US 40, this climb is basically out for this season, unless you do it on a Sunday afternoon. The weather has been too warm recently for this to form up yet. However, there is potential for the Mt. Russell flows (visible from the east side of the top of Berthoud Pass as you are heading East on US 40). We climbed there several weeks ago and they are coming in nicely. Depending on how it finally firms up, there may be some WI4 there (short). In addition, there is a decent WI3-4 flow not to far west of Empire on US 40. I will post better directions when I can. Nov 29, 2004

Climbed on 1/31 and 2/7. Tried to do a little farming of the flow, but the weather has not cooperated - too f#*_ing warm!!! Checked out higher in the gully and found another WI 2 flow a bit higher up. Still nothing real challenging, but entertaining for an hour or two. Feb 8, 2002
