The two areas Jefferson County Open Space intends to close in Clear Creek Canyon, shown on the attached maps, encompass the active eagle nests. If the Clear Creek eagles continue to nest in the active nests, these areas will remain closed from February 1 through July 31. If the eagles choose different nesting sites, the closures will be adjusted accordingly to protect those eagles during their breeding season.
Currently, rock climbing areas that fall inside of the seasonal raptor closures include:
Blonde Formation
Bumbling Stock
Evil Area
Ghost Crag
Highlander
Skinny Legs
Stumbling Block
Tetanus Garden
Fault Caves
Description
High Profile Wall is a funky crag with several, seldom climbed, Clear Creek testpieces. This crag appears to sit almost on top of the road and its clean, main wall faces West and North. Hungry Wolf and Stuffed Wolf are a pair of well bolted 5.13s that are less than half a rope length and share an anchor. Puppy Chow is ostensibly a top rope problem, although getting the TR set up would seem more challenging than it was worth. Scramble up to a rough ledge via an exposed 50 foot 5.1 face. This scramble can be protected with a few wires if that seems prudent. HPW is a good spot to work out some hard moves with minimal commitment and an endless stream of onlookers to cheer you on.
Getting There
Current access per Josh: park at the Big Easy Trailhead (about 8 miles west of the US 6 and CO 93 intersection at the mouth of the canyon). Walk on the paved path east/downstream of the parking, cross the bridge, and look for the sign just on the other side marking the 1/4 trail through the woods to the crag.
Previously : 8.2 miles West of the intersection of US 6, CO 58, and CO 93 was a pullout on the South side of the road. This could be used for both the High Profile Wall and A Little Piece of South Dakota. It was necessary to wade across the stream for both crags. The best spot for wading varied with the season but is usually up-stream of HPW.
