Rebinding a Guidebook

After my most recent trip, I found my Creek guidebook in sorry condition, cover completely torn off. It seems to be a common problem with these...

I followed this guide to give it a new, hardback cover. Took about an hour and a half, and the only supplies I didn't have on hand were fabric and a sacrificial hardback book to steal the cover from (I got one at a thrift store for $1). I added ribbons for bookmarking

I wanted a color that would stand out in the desert sand, so I went with purple. Here it is laid out

I glued the old cover to the inside flaps,

and added a design to the front.

Some of the Elmer's glue shows through the cotton fabric; maybe get something thicker or waterproof if you are going to try this, or use less glue. I'm happy with it overall though.

Beautifully done! And great idea! Next time someone does this, try getting some PVA or bookbinders glue. Dries more slowly and is more flexible. Talas is a good source for book cloth if you get more ambitious. I definitely have some guidebooks that could use this treatment

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
