EDITED: LRS: questions about continuous loop method.

I am exploring better ways to rope solo. Wondered if any of yall could help illuminate some things for me!

Im jugging with pack not hauling.

When using continuous loop system, do you tie both ropes in big loop (2x joining knots)?
OR do you only tie dead end of lead line to top of haul line?

If the latter, are you constantly untying, retying the joining knot, since rope ends swap top/bottom every pitch?

thanks

Ropes, anchor and haul bag go like this

anchor -> rope 1 -> rope 2 -> haulbag -> anchor

everything starts and ends at the anchor.

climb to the second anchor and fix the ropes to it. You can pull up all the slack to the top anchor if you want or just leave it hanging. I fix both rope 1 and rope 2 to the top anchor, with the slack just organized nicely at the top anchor. Do not untie the knot connecting rope 1 to rope 2, so the sequence would be slightly different.

Bottom anchor -> rope 1 -> top anchor -> slack and knot between rope 1 and rope 2 -> top anchor -> rope 2 -> haulbag -> bottom anchor

Patsy, sounds like you do not tie ropes in big loop, just joined once.  Thanks.  When you clean the pitch do you bring all of your lead rope with you on bites?  Also, if you dont untie the joining knot, if you stack while hauling (joined end now on bottom of haul line stack) you will need to restack right?  Or do your rope bags allow you to flip 180deg so no restack required?

Kevin, to clarify, you are saying that when using this system they don’t swap? Or period? Because my current system works best (minimal rope movement, never jugging with rope weight) when both lead and haul line swap ends each pitch. I like my current system because there is no unnecessary rope movement, and i can clean “light” with microtrax backing up jugs and no knots below, let it hang.

If running the continuous loop means i need to jug with entire lead line on bite knots below me (or let dangle and pull up all the way to end when im at the top anchor to refix for the next pitch), im not sure its for me.

My current system allows me to jug with no rope weight (important since not hauling and jugging with 20lb pack), never ever have to pull up or flake my lead rope, and only ever have to pull up the haul line to reflake in bag (jugging with pack, so no bag lowerout/haul i just let haul line go plumb with no knots and start cleaning on lead line). Its downsides are the fact that im leading with haul line weight, and no ability to tag gear.

I admit that i would likely have to modify my system if i encountered high winds, to reduce the ropes dangling 200’ below me. So perhaps once im forced to give up my desire to jug with no rope weight, the continuous loop becomes more of an obvious choice.  I have not been hosed thus far though but maybe im cruising for a bruising.

thanks for your replies.

If you're rope soloing but not hauling, why even use 2 ropes?

Route traverses severely and requires dub rope raps, also my plan is to fix first 400’.  I went and practiced since making this post and answered my questions.  Tagging is too much faff for the pitches in question, but the continuous loop i will apply.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
