Legality of Deep water soloing at Summersville Lake?
|
we have a group coming to the New/Summersville the weekend of 6/12. In years past we have deep water soloed off a pontoon boat, even encountering rangers, without any problems whatsoever. The Rangers were super nice and told us we could keep climbing just no “cliff diving”. Is this still the case? |

Dude it’s weird there, cause technically you can climb on the cliffs but if you fall off them, is that cliff diving? It’s a grey zone, it’s encouraging that you ran into rangers out there and they didn’t seem to care. |

Rule of thumb is if you fall off, make sure you're facing the cliff. Less likely to get pegged as cliff jumping. |

When my buddy got a ticket a few years ago they told him you have to less than six feet above the water to jump in. They tried to wave him off, but he was focused on getting his dive perfect for the snapchat, so he didn't see them. |

Thanks for all the info from everyone that responded.. Sounds likes it’s variable. We will proceed accordingly |

If you go, have someone looking out for the rangers while you're climbing so you can be more careful of falling when they are going by. |

We go multiple times a year when it’s really hot. Haven’t had any trouble but also haven’t jumped when the Army Corp boat cruises past. It stands out like a sore thumb. Be smart, look before you jump. TONS of people are out every weekend deep water soloing. If they where keen on writing tickets you would hear of it way more often. |

Cool! Thanks for advice! |

I went with my friend 3 weeks ago and didn’t have any run ins with rangers. We didn’t jump anything over 30’ and topped out where ever we could. One of the best times climbing I’ve ever had though, highly recommend it. |

It's more for cliff jumpers than DWS; there are a few fatalities each year from cliff jumpers, and just last week there were two severe injuries in a day. It's crazy the stuff some of these rednecks do. But be aware that it applies to DWS, too, I know of a couple folks who have gotten tickets like the poster above. |

Also, It’s Stuff like this, that will impact access and doesn’t help dws’s perception. |

Less than $100 I think |
