I want to purchase a South Dakota guidebook that includes FAs and other historical information about early climbs. I'm especially interesting in compiling a list of climbs in the region put up Fritz Wiessner. If the book is not up to date, but includes historical data, that's OK. Of course, I'd prefer one that is up to date as well.

Did you try Chessler Books?  Sometimes he has a copy of "Touch the Sky" for the Needles / Black hills.  Also try Granite Sports in Hill City SD  (Web pages for both)

"The Needles of Rushmore" is in print  (Busse & Burr)   There's also a great little guide by Cheryl Mayer & Daryl Stisser "Needles , A Mini Climbing Guide".  Both of these should be available from Granite Sports.

Always enjoy your "climbing sagas" in Adk Explorer.

If you can find "Touch the Sky" with the original sketch map packet, it's super well worth having for the extra $$$'s it might set you back. Very detailed, although Cheryl Mayer & Daryl Stisser "Needles , A Mini Climbing Guide" has enough to get you to the correct formations.

Thanks for the advice. I will look those books. Glad you like the Explorer articles. I'm retired from the editor's job, but I expect to continue writing for them.

If you don't find one in the price point you need I'd be happy to flip through mine and look for any particular info you would like.  As mentioned above, if you can find one with original maps that's an even better score, but I see a lot of the ones online now don't specify whether maps are included (meaning they almost certainly are not).

I also have a copy of an even earlier guidebook from Bob Kamps (1971) that Piana's guide was based off of, but I think they are very similar and Kamps is hard to find.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
