How did Flyboys ( mountainproject.com/route/1…) get on the same list as the Nose, Exum Ridge, Epinephrine, Naked Edge, and Liberty Ridge? I haven't done it and I'm sure it's great, but I doubt it's on par with the rest of the routes above and below it on the list...
It is a secret for the most part. I have asked before...
From what I can figure it has to do with several factors: number of ascents, stars, number of high ratings, and there is absolutely a geographical component it to it. This prevent Boulder and Yosemite from having all 20/50 classics.
If you ask me the one climb on the list that's out of place is High Exposure. Two pitches 250ft. Flyboys with 1800ft of climbing shares a lot more in common with the rest of the list than High Exposure. That being said I've never climbed any of these just an observation.
Ah yes, the list also tries to cover a broad range of grades. Hence High Exposure - a route that I have climbed, and it is without a doubt a classic climb. Top 20? Hard to say. But the trend of massive multipitches being the primary requirement for classic is questionable.
