the thing is, this could be a deal breaker if i was up there with a bunch of folks wanting to flog down the cattle chute.  particularly if i don't know them and i don't know if they can lift their feet without knocking stuff down.

i think we all rap into the void to some extent at some time.  given the info the OP had, it isn't too much different than circumstances that most climbers experience.  think of how many routes you have climbed that probably had some vague info like "rap the opposite side of the formation", or "rap the face to the left", etc.  sometimes onsighting (or flashing i guess..) the rap doesn't go as planned.  :)

but I wonder how long it takes to rap the SCW when you know all the "correct" anchors?

​i know the answer to this. We climbed SCW as a threesome once and our 3rd decided to hike down as my friend and I rapped.  We all started at the same time with our  chosen descent option. The 3rd who hiked down beat us to the packs by at least 10 minutes. So it is quicker to hike down.
