How To Get Asked Out on a Second Date

How to NOT get asked on a second trad date with me - removing ANY wired nut by jerking it up and out!

It fatigues the wire causing it to be retired early, as well as permanently bending the wire in one direction. Bending in one direction makes it hard to place in certain situations.

A quick tap with a nut tool in the appropriate direction is a way better method.

I don't think anything is hours from anything in Rhode Island.

I only read the initial post so some of this may already be stated:

  • offer to drive. The leader brings the expensive gear and the rope gets wear and tear. Contribute by driving.
  • over communicate. If the leader calls down "Off belay" ALWAYS respond with at least "OK". The leader doesn't know if you heard him/her otherwise and has to yell it again, or be wondering if you heard them. Better yet if the leader is saying he/she is off belay reply "OK", take them off belay, and say "You are off belay" to prevent misunderstandings and remind the leader they are off belay.
  • don't lolly gag. RGold already posted a lot of strategies to keep the leader from waiting for you. Do them. If you aren't ready to climb when the leader says on belay at least communicate and say something like "I'll be ready in two minutes"
  • beer and snacks. Don't offer just bring it. Or say what kind of beer do you like? Of course this is for after the climb.
  • clean and organize. Usually beginners make a mess of the rack when cleaning. Because they are gripped. It's understandable. But work on staying organized and as mentioned don't take biners of the gear (quick draws, or cams) that they belong with. with two experienced climbers you can have two identical gear slings, the second cleans and organizes on the way up, and can simply start the next pitch if swinging leads, or hand the leader the whole rack in one go. it can save 5-10 minutes at each belay. it's better to take a little rest at many stances while climbing and keep the gear organized, than to rush up the pitch and spend extra time at the belay to deal with it.
  • flake the rope. when you get to the base of a climb, uncoil the rope and flake it out while the leader gets the rack ready. At the top coil the rope.
  • offer to carry more than 50% of the weight. A rope weighs about 8 pounds. A normal rack weighs about 8 pounds. Maybe take the rope and half the rack or the leader's water / snack.

Yes!  RGold is a legend and knows his stuff!

But you’re in Burlington!  I love Burlington!  Went to undergrad and grad school there for 8 years!  Groovy-UV!

Cannot wait to be back on the Lake for a few weeks this summer while moving from Germany to Colorado.

Have some B&J’s for me down on Church Street!

This thread is about the Second Date.  First Date is in another thread somewhere in the Injuries and Accidents forum and has the words “Want to Epic?” in the title.

Clearly more positive feedback is needed here. This is everything you've always wanted to mention to your newbie second but forgot to say until they screwed it up and you got frustrated and impatient. All great advice, well worth reading THE WHOLE THING and sharing with your newbie BEFORE you turn into a jerk and start yelling at them.

  • "How To Get Asked Out On A Second Date By Your Newbie" is the thread you need to post.

"(b) Be totally attentive. No chatting with anyone around. If people try to chat with you, tell them politely that you need to pay attention to your leader."

Nothing gets me more when I'm on the sharp end and the person on the other end is chatting it up with others. Always remember, you have the life of another in your hands! Otherwise, expect to be the lone soul sitting out the dance wondering why you're not being asked out again.
