I tried the idea of saving wall space (and wood) by chopping the 16 inch / 45.6 cm Metolius wood rungs. First saw this at the Salewa Cube climbing gym at Bozen, Italy.

Small rung chopped into three 5.35-inch pieces,
with some extra holes drilled to allow three screws per segment:

Medium rung chopped into four 4-inch pieces (two shown) segment:

I think the 4 inch width is enough for holds from which I want to launch a campus move, or do uneven-grip muscle-up/pull-ups or uneven-grip hangs/lockoff.

I like the 5.3 inch for holds that I want to latch to finish a campus move.

Then I screwed the chopped segments into my cramped training boards in and over the bathroom door of our small condo apartment.

Left to Right, there's an (abbreviated) column of Medium chopped rungs, a full column of Small chopped rungs, another column of Medium, another column of Small, and a single Medium.

Making a move on the two columns of chopped Small rungs:

Making a move on two columns of chopped Medium rungs:

Happy with it so far.
