Internship Opportunity Needed

I am in my final year at East Carolina University finishing up my BS in Recreation and Leisure Studies with and emphasis in Outdoor Education.

I've been climbing for 10 years and am looking to do an internship in the guiding industry somewhere. I moved to Boulder for a year last spring and started using Mountain Project more, I don't post a whole lot but I loved the community. I use it to pick up partners, find routes, and generally entertain myself.

I live in NC now but am open to an internship anywhere in the US. I've been looking online and through friends for opportunities, but figured it certainly wouldn't hurt to reach out to the MP community. I'm open to administrative work, roles that involve primarily shadowing trips, leading backpacking trips, and anything in between. My strengths lie in long technical rock routes but I am a decent ice climber. I have no glacier experience but really want to learn.

I spent two summers working at an outdoor adventure camp as a climbing instructor and have several years of outdoor retail experience, I am not a stranger to the outdoor industry. Any suggestions or opportunities would be greatly appreciated.

Are you looking for something that is strictly adventure guiding?

Depending on your temperament your background would serve you well for getting a job with a wilderness therapy program. There are a few that are more adventure based, but most of them will have some component of being a lead guide and training you to work with diverse people/skill sets/attitudes in difficult environments. It also pays more and is more regular than most guide work seems to be.

I work in Utah, but I know that there are programs in the Carolinas, New York, Maine, Colorado, Montana, and Idaho. Try backdoorjobs.com to see who is hiring these days.

Outward Bound/NOLS instructor. They generally won't hire till springtime, but the work can extend into the winter season.

Fox Mountain Guides has a summer internship program each year. You could certainly look into that if it fits your timeline.
