I've had a pocket rocket for 3 years and have always used an aluminum wind screen, I actually read the box for my wind screen today, and found out they say it can heat the canister an could make it explode. Has anyone out there actually ever heard of this or is MSR just covering there asses? Am I just lucky mine has never blown up? Also I have never used the heat reflector, and could that be a factor? Any thoughts out there?
Canisters usually let you know something is not right . Watch for flareups or uncontrollable flame .I doubt a can would blow without some kind of warning first.
I like white gas stoves in the cold.Nothin like the old Optimus blowtorch .
so when they say canister they mean stoves like in the pic? Do they mean stoves that attach to a canister of propane? I'm confused, does the Pocket Rocket fall into this area?
they are referring to stoves that screw directly onto the compressed gas canister. Most windscreens cover from the stove down to the ground. With canister stoves that attach directly to the canister (pocket rocket for example) the heat is reflected directly back onto the canister heating it up. Whether it will blowup or not i do not know, but it sure will expedite burning fuel! If you want to mod the pocket rocket with a windscreen, consider cutting the aluminum and attaching the stove to the canister through a hole. Look up some hanging mods of stoves.
