Modeling and 3D Printing Tension's Discontinued TB1 Holds

I've been 3D printing holds for my homewall for about a year and loving it so far. Most of my models have been a little rough so I decided to recreate the TB1 holds to focus on modeling techniques over design. I came up with a model for each of the TB1 holds and have printed them in PLA Wood, which is plastic with 20% (in Bambu Lab's case) wood powder mixed in with the plastic. The feel is actually really similar to the TB1 at my gym after chalking up. I've used a few techniques to add texture to other holds but don't find it necessary here.

On most of the holds it's a good price but at scale I don't know how printing a full TB1 would be. There's cheaper or higher % wood PLA, but I had credits for free filament from Bambu Labs. I'm also only able to climb around V2 on the TB1 so I would love to hear how the holds feel from a stronger climber. I can barely hang on the SCC or SCV with my other hand and feet on great holds. Was going to get a ~V8 climber friend on it and then he tore a pulley as I was printing them. I've found there's more people 3D printing holds than I'd expect but it's still pretty niche and I think the nerd side probably has an inverse correlation with the crushers.

Models are free here and if you hover the print profile you can see pictures of every hold: MakerWorld (Tension Board 1 Hold Set - Unofficial)

Short video of me pulling on a few of them here: Youtube (Tension Board 1 - Modeled and 3D Printed)

There was little info when I started, so I'm trying to put as much of my stuff out there as I can to boost the idea so more people get into it. Every time I post I tend to find at least one other person doing it too.

Also if I had a CNC I'd try to figure out how to use the models for that and end up with very authentic TB1 holds. Unfortunately not a justifiable purchase.

Bambu Labs is having their sale right now which is what I use, but I would caution you to do more research if you're buying a printer. I love it but there was a big fiasco with always online requirements or something right after I bought mine which seemed to ruffle some feathers. Hasn't affected me but it keeps me from outright recommending mine.

They def discontinued the TB1 completely? Last I heard was in March 2024 they sent out an email saying "there will be an indefinite halt on manufacturing for all current TB1 hold sets":

Our first announcement is for our TB1 customers. As our business has grown over the last 5 years, it has become increasingly necessary to design and manufacture all of our products with international distribution and scale in mind. Doing so helps us effectively keep up with the rising world-wide demand for our products. At one point or another, each Tension product has gone or will go through significant back-end changes and updates to adequately fit within our ever-tightening manufacturing schedules — all in order to ensure efficiency and smooth production across our entire line.

That being said — the time has come for us to spend a significant amount of time and energy to update the TB1 system in order to reflect the same scalability and to address prohibitively difficult manufacturing hurdles associated with the board.

What this ultimately means is there will be an indefinite halt on manufacturing for all current TB1 hold sets. This will primarily affect current TB1 owners who do not have a complete TB1 system (hold sets A, B, C, and/or expansions). In an effort to accommodate these customers, we will halt the sale of complete TB1s, and we will sell expansion sets to existing TB1 customers on a first come, first serve basis. We will continue to sell these hold sets at a first come, first serve basis until they are gone.

I contacted them in July and they said the factory seconds priced TB1 holds were to clear out their backstock, so they're at least tapped out for now. I don't think I have any more information either way if it's only indefinite or permanent, I just assumed it.

That sounds like a nice material to avoid the slickness of 3D prints.
I thought the CNC process limited the quality of the shapes on the TB1 (90° angles, sharp bevel, etc.) If I had the freedom of 3D I would make them a bit more ergonomic.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
