Is Lower Dream Canyon/Boulder Falls Open??
|
|
The latest info on the City of Boulder website says that Boulder Falls is closed due to a large rock fall event. However, when I look at the routes for Plotinus Wall there are numerous ticks dated after the rock fall closure. Are people sneaking in or is the area now open? Thanks! |

As far as I am aware, the trail to Boulder falls, and therefore the access to Plotinus, is closed and won't be open for a while until the city can check it out and fix the trail (next summer at least). Let's hope those people leaving ticks are accessing Plotinus from upper dream canyon.... |

i am pretty damn sure people ticking stuff are not accessing from upper dream and just blatantly don't care about protecting access to one of the best winter crags in the canyon. generally not cool or advised. |

An update that is not really an update: OSMP says that there is currently no timeline to reopen the trail. |

"Climbers disobeying the closure While the area remains closed, some people are ignoring the restrictions. In June, OSMP installed a trail camera for six weeks and counted over 90 people crossing into the Boulder Falls trail." |

Thanks for the article. Given the history of the trail and those cost estimates I really wouldn't be surprised if the city just closed the trailhead. The city is pretty strapped for cash right now. I wonder what permanent closure would look like and how they would realistically keep climbers out. |

As the temps change I have been wondering what the deal was as well since it has been a year w/ no real update. I see why they chainlink fencing is still up and it's closed if it's $8M to fix. It'd be nice to consider if there is a possibility for a non-touristy approach to the crags that starts well up-canyon from the current tourist trail and loops back to the crags. Coming in from Upper is possible but a huge pain and it's easy to accidentally wonder onto private property. 99.9% of the traffic on that tiny trail is for ppl to look at the falls with just a few trying to get to the climbing. When it was open I was always shocked at the number of cars/ppl there on the weekends just to look at the falls so it does seem like a legit liability to the county if it's unstable. |

Dropping in from the upper parking lot doesn't seem to bad if you know your way around the gullies by Lost Angel and Midnight rock. However there's def not enough parking up there to handle the amount of traffic that plotinus wall usually sees in peak winter season. |

The BCC is aware of the closure at Boulder Falls/Lower Dream Canyon and is working on a solution that would be amenable to the city and other land managers. In the meantime, please respect the closure. The city is well aware that many climbers were violating the closure. It has had cameras there. City officials, including those who are generally supportive of climbers, have expressed their displeasure at the violations. And, ultimately, this makes it harder to reach a long-term solution. Please direct any feedback to us directly so we can consolidate information from climbers and share it with the city. outreach@boulderclimbers.org |

Can someone post the directions to get to Plotinus from the top? I'm sure I could figure it out with effort, but x1000 climbers who all want to know, might as well save the duplicated effort |

Ellen Swrote: Afaik there's not really a super established trail, but you can pick your way directly South on climbers trails from the Upper Dream lot into a gully that goes to the creek, cross the creek, and then just follow the creek to the wall. |
