Duty fee from EpicTV
|
|
Just purchased a Ohmega from EpicTV. However it’s being held right now for a $70 duty fee. I’ve ordered multiple things from Europe before and never paid a fee. Anyone else seeing this recently? |

end of de minimis exemption - 8/29/25 |

De minimis exemption ended by executive order on 8/29/25. |

I just got hit with a $170 duty fee after estimating it to be $60 before ordering... I reached out to try to understand why it was more than I anticipated. |

Calculating tariffs can be tediously difficult even for the business professionals who import products for a living. Its no wonder we consumers can be flummoxed. Not only do we have to deal with the turmoil of all this, and the uncertainty of small parcel shipments, the product trade codes that are used to determine the taxation are notoriously difficult to interpret. I know some companies have entire departments dedicated to assigning the most favorable trade code to a given product type and country of origin. It sounds straight forward but it isn't. They're now turning to AI to make this easier, but it will take time before accurate tariff estimates are available on most commercial websites, for example. Even those writing the code don't quite yet know how all this will settle out. |

Brad Johnsonwrote: Did you just get off a wall? As noted the de minimis exemption end almost two weeks ago. Also as noted, trying to figure out the duty on goods is now a complete crap shoot. Which is really unfortunate because over the years I have ordered items that are were over the de minimis limit but because I could figure out the duty could limit the amount paid. |

Ha not a troll. I didn’t realize the minimums ended. Oh well $200 ohmega here we come! |

Have a friend that had basically the same tariff/fee calculation as yours-he ordered an Ohmega and got charged $69 in import duties which was far higher than the 25% he had guessed. |

Brad Johnsonwrote: Ouch! I wonder how they're calculating this because I got charged $32.39 in import duty to Southern California. EpicTV has the ohmega on sale for $107 so mine comes in at around $140... |

I think a big issue here is nobody including the shipping companies likely knows how to calculate duties that change by the minute and consumers don’t know what it should be to argue for themselves. |

The $69 is the correct figure, the price paid + shipping +50% (it's an aluminum derived product) and whatever collection charge is applied. But my informants in the industry say it's the usual teething problems which we also encountered shipping into the UK after Brexit, because customs are struggling with throughput when the incoming backlog starts to clog the system they stop assessing and move all the packages straight through at the basic rate (which is then 15%). It's also with DHL (and I imagine others) that while they were getting their own system up and running (and certified by the US government) they were using a third-party agency software system which may or may not have worked well, the customs agencies were also collapsing from manpower shortages, they were only notified 14 days before the tariff came in force what it would be and how to process them. It's a USA constructed f#ck-up. |

Its all about pressure. They mean for us to stop ordering international parcels and make us all wear that coat of pain. Sharpens the willingness to concede at the negotiation table.

Original Cost to purchase Ohmega from EpicTV to California last week Tariff Charge total: $32.40 Total cost to the front door: $161.27 Effective tariff % on this Ohmega purchase: 35% |

Kevin, forgive my cluttering the thread but… only $15 was actual tariff charge and $17 was dhl processing fee? If so, sounds like the shippers are making out quite well… (insert annoyed face here) |

Christian Heschwrote: Even before the de minimis ending private shippers would bend you over with their processing fees. When I have had pkgs sent I ask that the national post be used. It takes longer but no processing fees. |
