In the 00s cyclist and snow sport athletes still didn’t wear helmets. It was part of the culture, but now it’s out of style to be without one. I think climbing will see the same over the next 5-10 years, (I hope). There was a lot of helmet-lessness in the Dawn Wall too. I guess it's "just a pro thing". I can see how being helmet-less would help your career, recognition, etc. For technique it only makes sense for OW from my understanding... The feat was still BA and sooo commendable. The 2 shoe technique was hilarious, I can't believe it worked. Mad props Em!!! |

Yeah, everybody in our audience was a very audible gasp at that ripe watermelon head thwack....and more than a few, I'm sure, were "no helmet???" I am curious, why a 5 year lag, for this to get out? Did it overlap with Free Solo? It did look bad when Honnold was putting on his shoes, and his climber starts screaming. I understand the why of it, but many would just see "bad belay", or, at the least, total inattentiveness, without having any understanding. I will say, what a stand up friend thing to do though, for him to be there for her, repeatedly. She'd be the lead, for the whole thing, he's just....there. I was also impressed at how fast a rope could be jumared, if you're good at it, lol! A good flick. But not great, imo. Not in the way Meru was great. I'm assuming this one night only, limited, theatrical release is to satisfy some sort of awards criteria?? Or film festival entries? Big props to her for putting all her insecurities fully out there. Being a competitive climber can have a dark side, after all. H. |

Garrett Genereux wrote: Happy to stand corrected! All the ads for it were very adamantly "one day only, IMAX", which is kinda peculiar. The only things I recall that were one night only stuff, were very specific films about some issue or other, with a panel discussion to follow. H. |

Okay, I did like it, and it made me really like Emily. It was much better than a lot of the recent climbing movies. But, in another way, you could say, it was Emily crying for an hour and a half. |

I enjoyed the film. But I was baffled by her choice to not wear a helmet after not one but two falls where she hit her head. |
