I am super interested in diet and aging.

if you are interested in a deep dive, google  “Dave MaCleod ketogenic diet.”  He gives a very detailed overview of what is known, what is not known, and the limitations of dietary studies, which are far from hard science.

Why won't Russ come back?  I miss his sarcasm and ridicule more than I can say.

Because a lot of the younger generations have this idea that words can actually hurt them, so instead of letting things (like sarcasm) just go by, they whine and complain until action is taken. He was banned after an exchange with a moderator.

Li, you smoking some pretty weird shit.

Higher quality than whatever you’re on

Speaking of quality, V7 is my current gym goal. The holds feel okay, just don’t have the skill to pull them. Hopefully soon?

You need to come to my gym.  Some are actually V7, but I flashed one Monday nursing my hurt shoulder that felt maybe V4, lol.

Trump has proven himself to be a flexible leader. While I didn’t vote for him, I’m sold.

Running a country like a business is exactly what is going on right now looks like.

I had written much more, but will stop where we agree.

Li, Just to be clear--we DO NOT agree!!! Implementing facially absurd ( with mutually contradictory stated goals, at least for the tariffs), ridiculously drafted, and poorly implemented policies that have already caused great disruption and harm, both within the country and internationally, and then partially retreating in a panic when it finally sinks in that it was going to seriously hurt him politically, is not at all my definition of a 'flexible leader'.

Anyone running a business the way he has been running the country would quickly go bankrupt---oh, wait, that's right, he may just have some experience in that regard...!!!!

Anyway, a government shouldn't be run like a business--they have very different functions. The purpose of a business is to make a profit, while a government exists to provide services and security to it's citizens, it shouldn't be seeking to make a profit.

Talking of diet, my name’s Carl and I’m a carbaholic. I’m trying to lose weight by not eating dinner. So far I’ve lost about four kilos, now down to 67.1. I want to get to 65 or so, at 12.2% body fat. I say 12.2 because that’s where I was previously. I know that sounds very specific but that’s where I sort of stabilised.

Me too.  The great thing about being generally on a strict keto diet is that I can go off the rails once in a while with no problem.  Pizza is the thing that gets me.  It used to be ice cream, but it has been at least a year since I have had it.

Couldn't agree more. Trump apologists seem to grade him on a curve. Like he's a child. Oh look, he recognized his idiocy led to failure and changed course. Which any small child would do.

It is beyond a doubt that from any kind of historical perspective he will be viewed as the unique product of a (hopefully brief) time in America when techonology driven algorithms spread misinformation that manipulated a tiny majority of the voting population into voting for him not once but twice. In time he will be a malignant punchline, even if right now he and his people are turning the poor, the weak, the brown into human pinatas - just because they can, just because their UFC-watching base enjoys seeing other people suffer. Look at the scientists and professors being deported - how many of them are white?

This will not be a brief point in history…the reaction to this period will be every bit as irrational, but with a new set of ‘information’. I very much hope I am wrong.

On the topic of diet, I developed a wheat allergy about 30 years ago. I would break out in hives. There was very little gluten-free premade food available at the time. So I just gave up on things like pizza, pasta, bread, desserts, etc. It was tough for a while, but I got used to it. Well, there is gluten-free substitutes available now there are much more expensive and generally higher in carbs so nutritionally not worth it.
Michael Pollan , in his book in defense of food, said that if it has more than three ingredients, it's probably not food. All ultra processed food is really bad for you and tricks your body into believing it hasn't eaten. And there's many things that sound benign that aren't .for example natural flavor is made of petrol chemicals. Many foods have added sugar where there shouldn't be any sugar.
tofu is an interesting one. It's definitely a processed food. Many people are allergic to soy, all dogs are allergic to soy. And as soon as you turn it into anything beyond fresh tofu such as what is eaten in Asia, it becomes ultra processed food . Tofu still needs to be cooked. It should not be eaten raw although I've seen people do it..

Some of the produce in the grocery store, for example apples and cucumbers are treated with what's called food grade wax. Wax is made from petroleum .is petroleum food grade? it's not going to wash off..

All commercial grains are treated with herbicide before harvest so that it dies and doesn't mold. A really good reason not to eat wheat. There's also a lot of pesticides used in growing grains.
Just my two cents

I don't associate pizza with carbohydrates, mainly because my crusts are paper thin and just crispy enough to handle withouta fork. I learned this in New Haven CT, pizza capital of the universe.

I was once told by a lifetime government employee who had worked under many presidents that you don't have to worry so much about presidents and their actions because they really don't have that much power in the grand scheme of politics. It seems they were mostly correct until now, these days I'm seeing what looks like the total opposite. I see a few politicians taking real stands against the actions from the top but certainly not enough to make much of a difference. If anyone has noticed,  Fox news is giving Bernie Sanders more airtime than ever, shits getting real weird!

Nice! You’re close to 12%!

I’m trying to get to 15% again.

Yeah, I know how you feel. Movement (Planet Granite) is where I climb and the grades are definitely stiffer than SoCal. On par or harder than many gyms in the NE, but gyms vary quite a bit below V5 and appear to become the same above that?

Even the campus board lacks the jugs I used to enjoy down south.

You’re not wrong. People are irrational about their decisions. If the folks on this thread really wanted the elections to have turned out differently, they should have done much more before the elections. I believe that I was the ONLY person warning of what would happen, and I can go back to all those posts and see the cool reaction to those. As far as I’m concerned, we all got what we deserved.

But since it turned out the way it did, make the best of it.

What’s important to me is free trade, as much as possible anyway. I’m also not a Republican…

I prefer to believe some large percentage of the other half of those voters were people who really don’t like him as a person or a ‘leader’, but felt that the alternative was simply too far out of their worldview.

It's good you've brought this up. Having registered as a Democrat in 1955, I have been a member of the party longer than some of you have been alive. I have voted many, many times for their champions, starting with JFK in 1960. But, it is difficult to excuse the leaders of my party for their complete failure to choose a candidate up to the task this last election. I kept hoping for an actual convention rather than the fiasco that occurred. I kept hoping Michelle Obama or another woman of color would appear, or someone as liked as Josh Shapiro - although his support for Israel in the war in Gaza could have been contentious. In other words, I choose to blame the Democratic Party for the state of affairs in which we find ourselves.

Rather than castigate those who seek to find some glimmer of hope in the current administration, work to correct the deficiencies of the other party. Or, continue to rail against your fellow climbers for capsizing your ship in the Gulf of America.
