tommy caldwell moves to california?

There’s no walking that back now. The conclusion is clearly that everyone needs to leave Colorado and move out to Sacramento and the Bay Area. With Tommy’s departure, Colorado is officially not cool anymore.

CA has better granite, better weather, better (and more) national parks, better weed, and better beer. And we have the ocean. Colorado is a 2 star version of California.

I won't argue any of that, but what I'll say is that the absurd COL and horrific traffic at all hours of the day on all days of the week significantly eat into all of the good that the state has to offer. Accessibility is not nearly as good or quick in CA, not in Socal unless you live in the IE at least. And even then, god help ya with Riverside traffic.

Estes park is a strange type of zoo. I lived there in the 2006-2010. Summer was always a zoo but at that time winter mellowed things out. Now it is just nonstop tourist traffic and busyness. No way would I live there now.

I just love when people make sweeping statements about "________ state is better than _____ state." WTF does that really mean? Is Bakersfield the California we're talking about? Or Bishop? Or La Jolla? When we talk about Colorado is it Grand Junction or Telluride or Denver?

I think the quality of life in Tahoe is pretty great for any person who loves the outdoors. Same with where TC was moving from.

Yeah but more the massive influx of people everyday. It does have more beauty than the front range which really is brown.  It is a small valley that sees alot of visitors everyday. I enjoyed my time there but happy I have moved

Colorado is cool until you live in Colorado.

Tahoe is beautiful, has a great vibe, and lots of quality climbing.  Estes is pretty, has a good local community, and excellent access to alpine rock.  Both are seething tourist traps all summer long.

I haven’t lived in Estes but I’m pretty close, and have been on the CO front range for 13 years.  Prior to that I lived in North Lake Tahoe for 10 years.
Personally, I like CO more. The economy is a bit less striated, the climbing has more variety, and access to amenities is better. Also the snow load is less punishing.
But if I had the finances and wanted to move location, Tahoe beats out almost everywhere.  Tommy has always been one of my favorite climbing superstars and I hope he likes Tahoe as much as I did.  I’m super excited for him to be closer to Yosemite and the Sierra.  The Tahoe Alpine will also benefit from someone of his caliber.  Get crushin’, Tommy!

Got it, colorado is better if you're poor and don't like snow.

TC is a professional who can spend his time away from home and pursue any objectives anywhere he wants.

So he clearly should have bought a home in Iowa, just to screw with you dufus’s.

And if you like climbing a wide variety of rock types.  Yes.

Hot take….but; Colorado has great granite boulders and decent limestone sport routes. Tahoe has great granite boulders and great granite routes….wide variety of rock types isn’t a selling point to most people if the rock is mostly choss. YMMV

Both Colorado and California are amazing, fantastic places to live and climb. You should go there.

I lived a short while in Loveland CO, a few years in Salt Lake, and most of my life in California: Santa Cruz- SF bay area, 8 summers in Yosemite,  11 winters and 3 summers in Truckee. Yeah Colorado and California are great places for a climber to live, and I really couldn't pick one over the other. Except living in Yosemite, that's a clear #1 to me. But CO has my second and 3rd favorite places to rock climb,  plus the South Platte, RMNP, and Lumpy and Boulder Canyon,  so Boulder CO probably #2,  for me.

Salt Lake isn't to shabby either. I also have lived there, for 3 years.

Chuck Norris checks under his bed for Tommy Caldwell.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
