phyl, I like Franz Kline and yours is great. Since you're a color freak, I look forward to a nice Rothko.

Let’s see how well things continue to bounce back:

“There was little fundamental reason apparent for the bounce Tuesday with more dire trade news overnight. China said it will "fight to the end" after Trump said Monday the U.S. would slap an additional 50% tariff on China if the country follows through with its 34% retaliation.

"It looks as if investors are reloading on the long side following yesterday's dramatic market action which appeared to round off a frenetic sell-off," said David Morrison, senior market analyst at Trade Nation.”

There’s no point listening to anything the administration is lying about. I agree with the ultimate goal to expand jobs within the USA, but honestly 4.5% unemployment when Biden left office does not sound like a lot of newly added jobs.

Perhaps, what they meant were to replace low paying jobs within higher paying ones?

Hard to guess, it all seems pretty random. Trump will eventually cave in to China and make it look like he won, something or another.

Worst case, he sticks to his rhetoric and blows everything as USA falls into becoming an emerging nation and joins BRICS.

Brandt has a Rothko I did for him. I’m on a climbing trip so I don’t have the photos with me.
Here’s a photo of the Utah Hills cliff I was at Friday:

From the car looking up

the second photo is the view from the base looking down. My car is the small dot at about 7:30 position.

Sorry Mark. It’s the Solstice, indeed.
got to go climbing now

Actually, what Trump and his Project 2025 sponsors want is to replace high paying white-collar jobs with low-paying, poor working conditions ones. Their goal is to return to their version of the US from 1874-1913 ( Trump specifically referred to that time period of high tarriffs as a 'golden age')---a time of rapid industrialization, true, but even much more drastic differences ( both in numbers and living conditions) between the 'haves and have nots'--with significant and violent labor strife, Jim Crow ( north as well as south), extreme poverty, horrible working conditions for most, extensive child labor, and, of course, while totally ignored by Trump, only made possible by the cheap labor and energy of massive immigration.

It was also a time when US expansionism transitioned from the closing frontier to more blatant overseas imperialism---another feature of Trump's world view.

I do agree, though, that whatever happens ( and it will require him to retreat, at least to some extent) he will claim it to be a win---he ALWAYS wins, just ask him ( you don't have to though, as he will loudly proclaim it!!!).

I must say, in the old people kicking ass department? I greatly enjoyed watching 1923, the Yellowstone prequel, with Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford. They were given terrific characters to work with....and were not just young people being old, taking up space in a story. They played those ages, and are those ages. Of course, Harrison Ford's archetype is old grump, but still, lol. It just concluded, so if you haven't seen it, one could now binge straight through, start to finish.

In the more serious discussion going on, 2 foreign University of Idaho students just had their visas revoked, no explanation. Dunno what their nationality is, either.

I was given a bit of a pause, recently. I'm Jewish, and our congregation is being urged to vote for candidates to fill spots in the World Jewish Congress. That organization is a large source of funding for the liberal Jewish factions in Israel, which is growing more and more toward extreme orthodoxy.

So.....

Hmmmm, I ask myself...

Would I want to have anything to do with this?

Or, even more so?

Be on record, in this country, at this time, as a Zionist? Or one who could be labeled such?

I am, after all, already associated with a tiny minority in Idaho. And a congregation that routinely has a Boise City police car and officer at services.

No question being posed here. It was just...interesting...to bump into thinking about my "otherness" in this regard. Not the routine "othernesses" that's dealt with regularly. Mainly, old and female. I actually sorta like the invisibility of that. Do and say whatever, cuz nobody cares what Old Ladies are up to, in this country.

Today?

It is clean up the yard day! Full on spring, here. Blooming trees, spring bulbs....

And the grass thinking it should be mowed.

That last one will be put off, at least a bit longer!

H.

Edit to add, Bernie is coming to Boise. I haven't decided yet if I wanna deal with the crowds to get in to see him in person, but, I do enjoy a good speaker and it's fun that he's out there making noise.

Helen,

Such interesting questions you pose.  Over the years I've become virulently 'separation of church and state', because my church is easily on the chopping block. But I don't know if Catholics face anything near the targeted discrimination Jews face. I get laughed at and ridiculed, but I've never received a death threat.  It will be interesting to see how your inner dialogue progresses.  (back to retract that. Not even close, I know. A poor analogy.)

There was a warning for those of us who chose to join the protest on Saturday... "leave your cell phone at home".  Is it paranoia now to wonder whether data is being collected on those who oppose Trump, or more specifically the policies that are emerging?  Do we need to be careful about what we say and write, and to whom?

I followed a gentleman from Saudi Arabia, Raif Badawi, who wrote a blog that was modestly anti-Islam.  He was arrested, tried (sorta) and sentenced to six years in jail and 400 lashings. He appealed, and they arrested his attorney, and re-sentenced Raif to TEN years in prison and 1000 lashings.  He was in his early 30's, with a wife and 3 young children.  I never knew you could be sentenced to far worse if you appealed.

I followed Raif's case for the entire 10 years... he served every day of it, and then a few more.  Now he is required to remain in Saudi Arabia for another 10 years, and pay $250,000 before he tries to leave to join his wife and kids in Canada.  I continue to watch them all on Facebook.

But you and I part ways on the Old Lady thing.  And yet, I get it.  Maybe we need to represent both sides of aging.  It's one thing no longer being recognized as a woman, having doors opened for you, FEELING female. But there's other kinds of dismissals that harm us all, imo.  I'm fighting for better medical care for all of us.  I've had doctors tell me that they immediately write off any patient whose age is over 70 (ie assume a certain level of decrepitude, and certainly the cessation of any sexuality).  I'd like to see our wisdom valued.  I'd like to see our own consciousness raised beyond stereotypes.  It's ok to wear purple, yea... but it's also ok to create a startup, rock climb, write a fresh novel, take calculus (my bucket list).

I'm still hunting around for Cholla buds.  They are supposed to taste like artichokes.

Worth it! Go!

Bernie is an American Icon, like the Bob Dylan of the Senate.

No kidding. 45 and 30 MPH winds here in DE. But it is sunny and lots of stuff in bloom here, so not as bad as NH. Good time for a strained hamstring ☹️

Being from Vermont I just have to love Bernie!

I went to undergrad at UVM from '90-'94 and he would pop onto campus all the time and hang out with students.  Such a great guy and he strikes me as very genuine.  Not a common trait amongst the politicians that make it to the National scene.

I still wish that the Dem Party would have put him forth in 2016 instead of Clinton.  The country was so ready to go away from the deep pocketed career sell out politicians and I think that Bernie would have won and I would have loved it.

Who knows but can you imagine what would have happened?

Hell, probably the country would have swung so far right they'd have elected Trump in 2020 and again this last year!

;)

That's enough politics for me for the day!

Lori, they (just which "they", I dunno) are looking at Facebook posts and visas. And, remember, phone activity is part of what was used to gather up the January 6th folks and became evidence. If I go to any of these things, I'd not worry much about my phone, personally. But that's based on numbers. Me n everyone else, ya know? How much room you got to store everyone capable of getting pissed off at...well...anything, in this country? In theory? If I'm anti anything? I should have the libertarians on my side, amirite???

And here in Ideehow most of us got guns. Yee haw?!?

Post limit, but I just gotta get this in here....

Apparently Fitbit considers ax murderer a sport. And I enjoyed it. Only the last death blows to go. Jussssst sayin.....

@ phyl- that’s right, solstice.
Have seen it in the guidebook.
Am eager to hear what you think of it. MP reviews definitely mixed.

They do not want to bring any change.
Have you paid any attention to their "Hands off" slogan?
They want to preserve what they already have: a graft system channeling taxpayers money to NGOs and PACs aligned with Democratic party.

Wow!

I think you got mixed up at bit. Republicans want to preserve and expand a graft system that channels corporate funds to Trump and other right wing politicians in exchange for favorable deregulation and exemptions.

Sex offenders and other criminals can now buy a pardon, a dropped prosecution and/or a safe harbor from extradition.

Randy, it isn't worth it trying to argue with Yuri, especially if you rely on such old-fashioned approaches as facts, logic, and common sense.

And, what is really going to be 'for sale' now, at a significant price, will tariff rate reductions--and the real 'pay offs' won't be the ones that are made public!!!!

I really like it. I don’t know why people think it’s chossy. The routes are pretty long. Beautiful views. Approach looks long and arduous but it’s actually pretty easy.
It’s much more chert than limestone and most of the routes are off vertical. So I’d hate to fall there. It would flay all your skin off.
we hit the temps just right. It was close to 70 but felt great in the shade. There was a strong wind coming from the north that cooled the routes on the right side but we were protected on the left.

Had great days in RR today and Sunday but I’ll post something about those when I get home. Limestone again tomorrow…

view looking sw.

oh another nice thing - that road is in terrific condition. Barb thought she would even be comfortable taking her “ not off- road” car in there.
I’ve been to Kelly’s and Black and Tan before too. Like those as well.
