Gluten free in EPC
|
One of our group members has celiac disease and is wondering if anyone else has experience with the restaurants having gluten free options and no gluten contamination options or if she'll be on the Mexican market diet? Specifically wondering about Leo's and any other nearby eateries. |

My friend here is gluten-free. I make sure to wave my delicious donuts from La Gloria in her face. She says that almost all the places use corn tortillas, so it hasn't been a problem. Learning some common words for gluten items like Harina (flour) or trigo (wheat) has been helpful when ordering. |

You are in every EPC thread and I friggin love it. Thanks |

gluten-free and celiac are different tho. I'm gluten-free but if I have trace gluten it's not going to ruin me like it would for a celiac. I would be concerned about the seasonings used at the restaurants, but I can't confirm either way. I would be interested to know though because I have also had concerns about eating there due to this. |

Good point Annie, I'm not well versed in the disease at all but fortunately/unfortunately my climbing partner is! When were down there I'll try and keep track of what we find and if there any any issues and update the thread. Worst case scenario we'll make sure shes got clean pans and lots of veggies and protein to cook with. Fortunately we're staying at a house and not a community area so no shared kitchen to worry about. |

EPC aint some european, 1st world country. Don't count on any dietary accommodations. |

grug g wrote: Nice, it's grug g making yet another dickish comment in yet another thread while contributing nothing helpful. At least you're consistent. OP, it's not hard to find gluten-free options. Normal protein options (i.e., unbreaded, not fried) and vegetables were easy to find when I spent a week in EPC a couple years ago. Both in the small grocery store/market in town, and at restaurants nearby. |

Mike Qiu wrote: There is a decent grocery store where you have a standard variety of options to avoid gluten. We were eating dinners in peoples living rooms when we were there (they invited us). There wasn't a menu - you got what you got. Of course there are restaurants where you can order, but when we were there they were all closed. |

The wallmart on the way from the airport has lots of decent options and booze. Better options than the small store in town. As other posts have stated, some small places near crag are offering more vegetarian and vegan options. Leo’s is one of them and a great spot. |

After coming back, gluten was never an issue at all. All the tortillas were corn and there was only 1 case of potential contamination where she had a slightly bad night. But also could have been from too many margaritas. Check out Red point while you're there! Best climber hang in EPC |
