Unfortunately, the one thing about wet sandstone that will never change is the collective number of fucks people give about it.

There was also a party on Epi Saturday. I really wonder how they drove down the road with multiple large deep puddles, hiked along the very obvious soaked dirt, realized there was only one other party in the entire canyon climbing in one of the busiest months for BV and never questioned if they should be climbing. On the bright side, I did run into some French climbers that were gearing up at the parking lot and after a conversation they decided not to climb, good on them. Overall it was nice to see that most climbers chose other places to climb on a very wet saturday.

Taken from 36.180301, -115.376073. 1:10p on 11-25, Monday.

RR looks to be getting some amount of drizzle. Not heavy from where pic was taken, but enough to need to use windshield wipers every few minutes. Hopefully get more reports from those out there. Use your best judgement.

Was out in first creek today and definitely started raining around 9am

Here's total precipitation in past 12h from 11-25 @ 1:50p. Of course not enough stations to really get a picture of the canyons.

Doesn't appear to be drizzling at RR currently, from GPS close to last post of mine.

Got sprinkles when driving by entrance for calico, seems off and on.

Any on the ground info on how RR is?  Rain gauge is not showing much has fallen but I've been seeing very dark clouds and rain bands the past few days.  Perhaps it's only been hitting the canyons?  Is calico dry?

Too wet to climb today in the Calico Hills but maybe tomorrow. I went out this morning after the sprinkle and saw dampness deep into the soil but not much added by this morning's sprinkles. Canyons got more rain so perhaps they wouldn't even be dry by tomorrow.

So what's the protocol when were hiking in the canyons after rain and see climbers walking in presumably to climb on wet rock? I don't wanna be the asshole but come on guys there are signs on every single fence not to climb after rain.

Call them out and public shame is usually the best practice. Also I try and pick projects that are more obscure so when all the tourist come in and brake everything they leave the good stuff untouched

“Hey are you guys open to a conversation?”

“The way I see it…

“I wouldn't and its definitely not the local ethic,

“There’s some alternative routes….

“I’m not the cops, but….

“You won’t be the only one’s out today, but lots of people aren’t…

“What part of Boulder are you guys from….

and maybe you'll find out they were going to do something you totally approve of/was contrary to your assumptions.

There is also a weather station at Mountain Springs Pass at the high point of highway 160.

It looks like the canyon got some rain last night? Do you think it’s climbable on 26th (Trophy area and alternative crag)?

David Carlson · · Chicago · Joined Aug 2017 · Points: 0

Looks like 0.12" of rain over like an hour yesterday. As far as climbability, no idea

I went to calico basin (to check alternative crag) this morning. The deep we walked to the canyon, the wetter the ground at the bottom of the hill is. Looks like it rained more than 0.12”. We didn’t bother going up to check the wall and are heading to limestone now. I don’t think it will be much drier tomorrow.

FYI to everyone planning to visit RR for the holiday weekend, we're about to get slammed the next two days with a big storm.  I'm seeing anywhere from 1 to 1.5 inches of rain in Red Rock depending on the area for Thursday to Friday.  Weather is going to be clear for the weekend, but it will be limestone only.  Very sunny and sheltered areas might be okay on Monday, but that's the earliest anyone should be thinking about getting on sandstone.

These are the perfect conditions for people to “unassumingly” go climbing right after a rain storm in RR.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
